Gits and I were very excited. It was Saturday, and the night was almost upon us. Anytime soon, the little folk would come. We ran indoors, and closed all the doors. You see, if the little folk spied us, there was no predicting what they would do! "Did you leave a blanket outside?" I asked Gits. "Oh yeah, just left the white duvet."
I peeped outside. Horrors! Grandma had left the front door ajar! I rushed out from my bedroom, which faced the veranda (and the front door) at a right angle...Too late! None of the faerie folk had used the milky white duvet for their party...but what was this? I saw a tiny man clad in green standing inside the hall. It was the leprechaun. I'd heard that he was the only one of his kind in our neighborhood, having traveled all the way from faraway Dublin (God knows why and how!). He'd seen our open front door and ventured indoors...totally unheard of...but hey! who out here in Imphal had ever opened their doors willingly to the little folk?
I followed the little guy in, on tiptoes. What was the use anyway? He was super sensitive and sensed me immediately! I was a little excited...was he gonna share some of his gold with me? What happened next was totally unexpected!
I heard a tinkling of bells, and light of all hues enveloped me. I saw myself-- shrinking progressively, until I was as tall as the leprechaun. Gits was nowhere to be seen. And what was this? I had sprouted wings-- they were thin and papery, like a dragonfly's, but broader, like a butterfly's. My newly sprouted wings all golden and silver, with shades of emerald, lapis lazuli, and rose, turned out to be quite strong. Before I knew it, I was flapping away and soaring...up, up, and away...like superman (heh!)...no more a mortal Meitei girl in Imphal...but Ylerna, an elf, able to do magic...
And then I realized leprechauns don't share their gold. But who cares as long as you are a faerie yourself...heh!
